Vashon Musical Instrument Library
Since 2015, Vashon Events has been very pleased to offer a free music instrument library so that everyone can have a chance to learn to play a musical instrument! Borrow an instrument for up to three months. Scroll down to the available instruments and fill out the reserve form HERE. You must be a Vashon Island resident to borrow any of these instruments, and the item MUST stay on Vashon. We ask that you gently treat each instrument as if it were your own!
WE’VE MOVED THE INSTRUMENT LIBRARY RIGHT NEXT TO THE TOOL LIBRARY AT OPEN SPACE FOR ARTS & COMMUNITY! WE ARE SO HAPPY TO BE NEIGHBORS WITH THE FINE FOLKS AT THE TOOL LIBRARY!
The pickup/dropoff spot is next to Open Space for Arts & Community at 18870 103rd Ave SW, Vashon, WA 98070. Follow the signs to the Tool Library. Pull up to the loading dock door on the NE side of the O2 building, and we will help you.
You are now able to pick up and drop off instruments at this new location on the following days:
Wednesdays from 4 pm - 5 pm
Saturdays from 11 am - 12 pm
Please arrive within the one-hour window; we will only be there to check in and out instruments for the one-hour designated.
When you are ready to return your instrument, please email us at vashonevents@gmail.com to coordinate the return.

Artesano Classical “Valencia” Guitar
This guitar is a 1985 classical guitar made in Spain by Juan Orozco. The guitar is in excellent shape. There are no visible scratches or damage to the guitar. It was donated by Julia Gray (Hamlin) and was her father's guitar (Dexter Hamlin) who lived on the island for many years 1977-1994. He was an incredible guitar player and well connected to many island musicians during that time. It comes with a rigid guitar case which it's been stored in (unplayed) for the last 27 years since his passing.

Haruo Terada was the president of Terada Factory, Nagoya, Japan at the time of T.Haruo mfg. He tried to market their own model in the US, from Terada under the T.Haruo brand. Mr Terada never worked at Yamaha, but Terada was responsible for many MIJ models of Gibson, Gretsch, Fender and others in the 70s and 80s. They still make Gretsch hollow body electrics there, among others.

Early 1970s tenor banjo, made in Japan. This one is branded "Emperador" although near-identical models come under different brand names. Has a heavy aluminum tone ring, mahogony neck and resonator with high-gloss finish and chrome hardware. The tuners may have been changed. Very little playwear throughout and only a few light dings on the headstock. The instrument is 88 cm long overall, the tone ring has approx. 33 cm diameter. The neck has a 58.5 cm scale length, 29 mm wide at the nut.

The origins of the ashiko drum are traced to the Yoruba culture in (mainly) present-day Nigeria and Benin, West Africa. The word “ashiko” is also traced to a word in the Yoruba language meaning either “drum” or (with tonal difference) "time-frame" or “freedom”. The drum has a long tradition in Yoruba culture, where the drum functioned in community celebrations, as well as a “talking drum”. Traditional ashikos were/are hand carved from a single lug of wood and were not straight cones.

The Meinl African Talking Drums are carved into an hourglass shape from a solid piece of Mahogany wood, and decorated with a carved motif. Two hand-selected goatskin heads are spanned with high-quality nylon rope. Traditionally, the talking drum is played beneath one arm, and held against the ribcage. The drum is then squeezed to "bend" the pitch while the other hand employs a curved striker.

The Yamaha Pacifica 1221MS is a high-end Yamaha Pacifica guitar from the Yamaha Pacifica series that came to life under the creative guidance of Rich Lasner. The Yamaha Pacifica 1221MS features a basswood (tele) body, a warmoth neck with a compound radius reinforced with carbon graphite rods, DiMarzio pickups in an HSH configuration and the Yamaha RM-Pro II tremolo. Other features on the Pacifica 1221MS are the "Total Access" neck joint, which consists of a roomy lower body cutaway, a low profile neck heel and a machined aluminum mating block extending deep into the body. It also features a height adjustable locking nut. The guitar was made in Japan and assembled in Taiwan. Following in the footsteps of its popular (and far more expensive) big brother, the K250, the Kurzweil K1000 is a sample playback instrument as well as a synthesizer. Weighed down by its 76-note keyboard, the K1000 boasts many of the same award-winning samples found in the K250 in a 24-note polyphonic multitimbral synth. The famous Kurzweil piano is here, as well as the gorgeous strings and brass too. The K1000 has emulations of almost any orchestral instrument you can think of. And they're great sounding. The popular rumor is that the samples were recorded using members of the Boston Symphony orchestra-and it shows.
The K1000 also has a very sophisticated digital/wave synthesizer engine. K1000 patches start life as a digitally coded waveform that Kurzweil calls a Soundfile. A Soundfile can be a sampled waveform (coming from Kurzweil's famous samples like piano, string, wind, etc...) or a digitally produced waveform like sine, sawtooth, or square. Then, you put Soundfiles together into the layers of a program. Effects are part of each layer as well.

The K2000 uses V.A.S.T. (Variable Architecture Synthesis Technology) which allows you to take any multi-sample, noise or waveform and process it using just about any synthesis technique. The source of these multi-samples are from the 8MB of ROM which hold tons of authentic and superb quality samples. The internal processing is 32-bit with 18-bit DACs. The K2000 uses 31 sound-shaping algorithms to provide a variety of resonant filters, EQs, continuous panning, amplitude modulation, crossfade, distortion, digital wrap, waveshaper, pulse width modulation, high frequency enhancement, low frequency oscillators, hard sync oscillators and mixing oscillators, all with real-time MIDI control.
It's a beautiful synth with an elegant and organized layout and very high quality pitch and mod wheels! Not to mention a 61-note velocity & aftertouch sensitive keyboard with a quality feel and response to playing. The K2000s adds a quality sampler with standard 2MB RAM that can be expanded to 64MB. Sample in stereo or mono, via analog or digital inputs and you have all the sample edit functions you'll need to create some of your own sounds. Use the built-in 3.5" disk drive or connect an external drive to the SCSI port for limitless sample storage (an internal SCSI connection also allows for a hard disk drive inside).
Other professional features include stereo multi-effects capable of four simultaneous effects including reverb, chorus, delay, multi-tap delay, flange, rotary simulation and more. Up to six polyphonic audio outputs. There's also the 32-Track sequencer, fully editable, with features like 768 ppq resolution and nondestructive track editing and groove quantizing.

Zither
A zither is a musical instrument consisting of one or more strings stretched over a resonating frame or soundbox and played horizontally. Its sound is described by some to be a cross between a guitar and harp.

Zithers, which are derived from an ancient instrument, were especially popular in Bavaria in the 19th century.
The Zither Factory in Washington, Missouri was founded by Franz Schwarzer, a young Austrian who emigrated to America in 1864. He began manufacturing his improved concert zither in Washington in 1866.
The zithers were made entirely by hand and of the finest woods. The craftsmanship of the Schwarzer zither received international acclaim when in 1873, when he received a gold medal at the Vienna National Exposition for the best zither in the world. By 1888 more than 3,000 Schwarzer zithers were owned by music lovers all over the world.
Zithers were popular until World War I and II, when all things German were despised by Americans, Houseman said.
The zither had a brief revival in popularity in 1949, when the film "The Third Man" came out with the theme song played on the zither.
This revived interest in the zither gave the factory a boost in sales for a few years, but it was not enough to keep it in business, Houseman said.
The Washington Zither Factory went out of business in 1958 and was torn down.

You can’t go wrong with this mechanical metronome from Tempi, which is made with genuine steel parts and finished with a handsome mahogany wood veneer over the plastic construction. This is a traditional pyramid-style metronome that emits a clear, clicking sound.

The saw u (Thai: ซออู้, pronounced [sɔː ʔûː], RTGS: so u, also spelled saw ou) is a Thai bowed string instrument. It has a lower pitch than the saw duang and is the lowest sounding of the saw family.[1]
The soundbox is made from a coconut shell that is covered on the open front by cowskin. The saw u is held vertically and has two silk strings that are played with a bow. The bow is between the strings and the player tilts the bow to play each string. The bow is made out of horse tail hair like every other bow and needs to have rosin put on occasionally just like a western stringed instrument. The saw u is a very fragile instrument and is played traditionally on the lap sitting down. The saw u can be played as a solo instrument in some cases but is mainly used for the backbone in some ensembles because of its rich, dark, and mellow tone. The saw u performs its best when playing slow to moderate paced melodies. The sound that the saw u makes is more fit for those types of songs rather than fast paced melodies. The morn (bridge) that rests at the bottom is extremely sensitive and drifts over time, causing changes in tone. The saw u is similar to the Cambodian tro u and was developed by the Chinese into the yehu.

Also called orchestra bells, the glockenspiel resembles a small xylophone, but it is made of steel bars. The glockenspiel is typically played with wooden or plastic mallets, producing a high tuned sound that is bright and penetrating. The name glockenspiel comes from the German language and means “to play the bells.” Orchestra bells are a musical instrument in the percussion family. This instrument is one of the few melodic instruments on which percussionists perform. The sound of the instrument is very light and "tinkly," but it cuts easily through an ensemble.

Evette & Schaeffer branded horns from this era, the mid 50s, were intermediate stencils crafted by Malerne; later this line was rebranded under Buffet-Crampon as the E13 in the 1980s. This instrument is a solid option for an intermediate level player, or someone picking up the clarinet as a second instrument. It is a great step-up in tone as its body is a higher-quality wood.

The Bach TR300 (Conn Selmer) Trumpet is made in the USA using nothing but the highest quality materials. It offers a .459" bore with a responsive 4-7/8" seamless bell for easy projection and control. The 1st valve thumb saddle makes for easy intonation adjustments. The clear lacquer finish provides a subtle warmth to the overall sound. The TR300 is a well designed durable instrument perfect for the beginning student and is well suited for all types of music.

This trumpet can only be loaned out to very experienced trumpet players - it's a vintage, rare collectible trumpet and should be treated with the utmost care. We are making it available for our island trumpet aficionado players to test drive.
Although Benge trumpets were always in demand it's probable that some sat around after being made. With some Chicagos, it's also possible that Elden Benge played them for awhile being shipping them to a buyer. This particular Benge Chicago #614 trumpet was owned by Paul Williamson and was purchased new in 1942. When Benge repaired #614 in the 1950s he remarked to Paul, "I remember this horn!" It's quite possible that Benge played the horn with WGN for a period of time before moving on to another newly-made horn. Thanks to Paul Williamson, we know that Elden Benge included the option of a mouthpiece as early as 1942, as he received one along with #614.
This trumpet was made available to our Instrument Library by Bailey de longh. It belonged to her father-in-law, Paul Williamson. Paul played this trumpet his whole life including for Cal in the Rose Bowl.
