band bio:

Zaftig is a fresh, jazzy homegrown Vashon Island quartet with an international flavor, bringing you a voluptuous sound with sultry vocals and a multi-lingual repertoire. A tasty musical cocktail of Bossa Nova , French café, and world jazz styles with some vintage standards thrown in , Zaftig will delight your senses, stimulate your soul and uplift your spirits.

Carol Crozier - vocalist

Carol has been passionately involved in the world music scene for over 20 years, as a dancer, vocalist, teacher, percussionist and choreographer. You may remember her leading the RhythmJoy Brazilian Samba dancers with cross-cultural percussionist Geoff Johns, an annual favorite in Vashon ‘s Strawberry Festival Parade. She loves to sing in other languages like French, Portuguese, Sanskrit and occasionally in Yoruba and Kreole. Carol now brings her sparkling presence and striking vocal talents to Zaftig in this, her newest musical incarnation.

Van Crozier - saxophonist

Playing sax on Vashon for over 25 years, you may remember Van from the Portage Fill Big Band, Loose Change, and other local groups. He was the baritone sax anchor in Jay Thomas’s Friendly Fire big band for 23 years, performing monthly at Tula’s and The New Orleans Café in Seattle. Van started his professional career in 1973 with Billy Price and the Rhythm Kings, house band at the Fox Café in Pittsburgh PA, and he has been playing ever since.

Stephen Buffington - Guitar

Stephen has been playing guitar (and bass and drums) for the last 30 years across all styles; always up for a new adventure. Early on there was much rock, some jazz and eventually 4 years of college for classical guitar. After that a move to Seattle to play bass for a grunge band seemed like the meteoric rise of a musician but then the triple threat of career, house and kids struck. After many, less musical years, being on Vashon finally got things going again due to the great music culture. Now back in full swing Stephen can be seen playing classical guitar on First Fridays, playing bass and drums for dance bands, playing African influenced guitar on the street, singing in the Opera, and playing jazz guitar with Zaftig.

Steve Meyer - Bass

Steve Meyer came to the bass after initially studying guitar and piano and has not looked back. He has studied jazz bass with Doug Miller and classical bass with Todd Gowers, both in Seattle. He currently plays with the Portage Fill Big Band and the Vashon/Maury Chamber Orchestra in addition to some smaller groups on the Island.
