Finding Courage in Dark Times – Public Sector Heroes Rediscovered
Seattle University professor emeritus Dr Larry Hubbell will present the second in a series of talks featuring public sector heroes. This talk, on Tuesday, Oct 14th, features activist, indefatigable humanitarian and tireless proponent for people Eleanor Roosevelt and will be introduced by Amy Drayer.
In 1934, when Congress was debating an anti-lynching bill in the Senate, Eleanor came out strongly for its passage, even though her husband Franklin was silent on the issue because he did not want to alienate powerful and racist Southern Democratic senators. Eleanor is contrasted with another personage of the time – Senator Joseph McCarthy.
Dr. Hubbell will relate the challenges faced by these historic figures to the challenges we face today from the current administration, followed by a discussion of what can be done today to respond to the current threats.
The talks are sponsored by Indivisible Vashon at the Vashon High School theater at 7:00 PM on 10/14, 10/28 and 11/11 – doors open at 6:30 PM. The talks are free but a donation is requested of those who are able.
