A Stupid Bike Night Update for Vashon (8-19-26)
PLEASE SHARE THIS SO THAT THE WORD GETS OUT.
Every First Friday in September, Town Center fills with spectators at dusk waiting for the stupid bikes — flame-throwing contraptions with working bars and grills, flower-festooned trikes, chariots pulled by giant wooden unicorns, riders in disco gear, space suits, neon wigs, gladiator garb, and glitter for days. Some bikes even haul musicians, all playing completely different songs at the same time. It's more Mad Max meets Dr. Seuss than an actual bike ride, and honestly?
In the past, it might be the most Vashon event of the whole year.
But this year, there's something important the community needs to know.
The Stupid Bike Club — the crew of clever contraption-makers, performers, and party people who organized this event — disbanded in 2025. The event had simply outgrown the original vision, and the weight of organizing it became too much. The nonprofit has shut down, and there is no longer anyone spearheading Stupid Bike Night.
Here's what that means for First Friday this September:
Roads will NOT be closed beyond 8pm. In past years, the bike parade didn't even start until 8pm, riding through streets that were already closed for the evening. This year, roads will only be closed 5-8pm for the normal First Friday closure-after that, cars are back.
There is no organization behind this event anymore, which means no road closure after 8pm, no safety plan, and no one coordinating the ride. If you bring your bike — or your kids — expecting car-free streets into the evening, that won't be the case this year. This is very much a ride-at-your-own-risk situation. We need to stress that it's a real safety issue.
We want to be clear: Vashon Events and the Vashon Island Chamber of Commerce are not affiliated with Stupid Bike Night and never have been. We're simply sharing this because we care about our community having accurate information before First Friday. We're not telling anyone what to do — we just want everyone making informed, safe decisions.
We'd genuinely love to see the community step up to keep this tradition alive in future years — Vashon without Stupid Bike Night would be a real loss.
PLEASE SHARE THIS SO THAT THE WORD GETS OUT.
However you spend First Friday, please be safe out there.
Stupid Bike Night 2026
Stupid Bike Night happens every First Friday in September right here on Vashon. Everyone is encouraged to join in on the ride. Decorating your bike is also encouraged, but not required. Just join in on the fun, that's what matters most. This event has become more Vashon than any other event of the year IMO. Stupid Bike Night is organized by some pretty cool cats that include some of Vashon’s most clever contraption-makers, performers and party people. You know who they are. ———>
Town Center promises to be lined with spectators at dusk, waiting to welcome the stupid bikes along their loop winding through town and up and down Vashon Highway.
The parade of bicycles features dozens of riders tooling through town on outlandish forms of tricked-out, lit-up, pedal-powered means of transportation — including a flame-throwing bicycle equipped with a working bar and grill, flower and foliage-festooned bikes and trikes, and chariots pulled along by giant wooden unicorns and circus horses.
You'll see wild, colorful costumes of the riders: disco attire, space suits, neon wigs, gladiator garb, Amish country clothing, giant baby clothes, glow lights and glitter.
Some of the bikes even haul musicians, creating a cacophonous ensemble that is more “Mad Max Fury Road” meets Dr. Seuss than an actual band. No one seems to be even trying to play the same song, with drummers, electric guitarists and horn players independently banging, blowing and blaring their music. It's the Vashon way folks.
Oh yeah, did we mention that ANYONE can participate? Dust off those bikes and be a part of this fun night!
