Finding Courage in Dark Times: Public Sector Heroes Rediscovered - Fred Korematsu with introduction by Joe Okimoto
Vashon High School Theater
Tuesday, October 28th
Free Range Freedom Choir starts at 6:30PM
Talk starts at 7:00 PM
Seattle University professor emeritus Dr Larry Hubbell will present the third public sector heroes talk at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, Oct 28th, featuring second-generation Japanese-American citizen Fred Korematsu, who refused to comply with the Japanese Internment Order 9066 during World War II. This talk will be introduced by fellow Japanese-American Vashon islander Dr Joe Okimoto.
The case against Fred reached the Supreme Court, which sided with the government - labeled by many legal experts as one of the most racist and poorly reasoned decisions the Court ever made. The person who was largely responsible for supporting the Internment Order was California’s Attorney General Earl Warren.
Dr. Hubbell will relate the challenges faced by these historic figures to the challenges we face today from the current administration, followed by a discussion with islander Jenna Riggs about what can be done today to respond to the current threats.
The talks, sponsored by Indivisible Vashon, are free. A donation is requested of those who are able.
