Memorial Day Weekend at Vashon Senior Center

The Vashon Senior Center building began its life in 1946, when it opened as Vashon Memorial Library with King County’s first WWII Memorial in the back outdoor space. The Memorial honors Thomas and Lad Bacchus, brothers who were killed within three months of each other near the end of the war. Vashon Senior Center board and staff have been working for over a year to restore this long-neglected part of Island history.

Sunday, May 25 at 2pm: Formal Rededication of the World War II Memorial: Featuring a color guard, Island veterans and their families, local dignitaries, and guest speakers. Island veterans are specially invited to attend, along with their families. Those who wish to attend are requested to RSVP by calling the Vashon Senior Center at (206) 463-5173 or by emailing admin@vashoncenter.org. Seating will be limited and we want to make sure everyone is comfortable.

Memorial Day, Monday May 26, 1pm to 4pm: Community Cook-Out and Giving Tree Unveiling: Islanders of all ages are invited to this celebration featuring live music from Riverbend, plus grilled hot dogs and veggie dogs with multiple toppings, watermelon and other treats. Monday's event will also mark the kick-off of a unique fundraiser in support of the Senior Center. Local artist Nan Leiter has donated her talents, money and time to create a wall mural featuring a beautiful Giving Tree.

Please Note: 100th Avenue SW, the road between the Senior Center and Puget Sound Community Credit Union, will be closed both Sunday and Monday, May 26 and 27, from 11am to 6pm due to Memorial Day Weekend events.
