If you've ever stumbled into a dive bar and heard the sound of punk colliding with country—odds are Jon Langford or Sally Timms had something to do with it.
Jon Langford kicked off his career in the late ’70s with The Mekons, one of the few punk bands brave (or weird) enough to veer into honky-tonk territory. Sally Timms joined the chaos a few years later, armed with a voice that could haunt you in one song and make you laugh in the next. Their chemistry? Totally organic. Equal parts sarcasm and soul.
They’ve done a ton together—Mekons albums, political benefit projects, quirky kids’ music (yes, really)—and solo stuff too. Sally’s Cowboy Sally persona charmed alt-country fans, while Jon juggled visual art, songwriting, and his tireless gig schedule.
Chicago’s their home turf now, and if you catch them live—say, at The Hideout—you’re in for stories, satire, and the kind of harmonies that come from years of singing beside someone you genuinely like.
No flashy gimmicks, no arena antics. Just sharp songwriting, dry humor, and two people who know how to turn a setlist into a conversation.
