Claiming the Wall
Vashon Center For The Arts
March 6 - 29
First Friday Opening, March 6:5-8pm

In celebration of Women’s History Month, “Claiming the Wall” presents an inspiring juried exhibition featuring 22 accomplished artists from Vashon Island and surrounding neighborhoods, including West Seattle, Tacoma/Olympia, and the Kitsap Peninsula. This regional showcase highlights the diversity of artistic voices and creative practices among members of Women Painters of Washington (WPW) who call this corner of the Pacific Northwest home.

“Claiming the Wall” continues VCA’s longstanding tradition of dedicating our March gallery exhibition to women artists. Coinciding with International Women’s Day on March 8, the exhibition amplifies work that inspires, challenges, and enriches our communities. Rather than adhering to a specific visual theme, artists were invited to submit work that reflects their current artistic practice. The result is a wide-ranging presentation of contemporary painting, offering insight into the depth and breadth of work being created by WPW members today.

This exhibition is presented as a WPW neighborhood show, curated independently by VCA and officially approved by Women Painters of Washington. All participants are WPW members.

Founded in 1930, Women Painters of Washington began when six women artists met in a portrait class at the Art Institute of Seattle, a predecessor to the Seattle Art Museum. At a time when women artists had limited access to professional opportunities and exhibition platforms, they organized to support one another’s artistic growth, build fellowship, and create exhibition opportunities across the state. Since its founding, WPW has remained dedicated to advancing women painters and fostering artistic excellence throughout Washington.
