Memory and Memoir
Public lecture by Alice Bloch
as part of the Phil Cushman Memorial Lecture Series
Saturday, April 18, 7pm at Vashon Havurah
15401 Westside Hwy SW
How reliable is our long-term memory of events in our own lives? Not very, it turns out. What does that mean for our sense of identity? How can we ever know that what we're thinking, saying, or writing about the past is the truth?
Using the latest developments in neuroscience and providing examples from published memoirs, Alice will talk about the role of episodic memory in our lives. Audience members will be invited to contribute to the discussion.
Light refreshments will be provided.
Alice Bloch is author of the memoirs Mother-Daughter Banquet and Lifetime Guarantee, as well as a novel and many personal essays. She reviews theater and opera for Seattle Gay News. She is a Havurah board member and coordinates the Meals on Wheels program on Vashon.
