Drama Dock kicks off its 50th season of theatrical excellence with the Northwest premiere of award-winning playwright Lauren Gunderson’s “anthropology”. Opening Thursday, May 21 at Vashon High School Theatre, audiences will have five performances to choose from. Tickets, including general, student/senior and 4Culture Public Access options are available now at www.dramadock.org

When you’re a brilliant engineer and your sister disappears, what do you do? You build her.

In her immaculate Silicon Valley home office, Merril believes in patterns and systems. But her life as a hotshot coder and AI expert begins to unravel when her younger sister, Angie, vanishes on her way home from class. After the police abandon their search, Merril gathers the digital traces her sister left behind—from texts and emails to online purchases and social media—and creates an AI chatbot version of Angie. At first, this virtual Angie offers comfort. But soon, it begins to reveal new details about the real Angie’s disappearance.

Director Steven Sterne shares:

“Anthropology artfully weaves elements of my favorite genres—horror, science fiction, and mystery—into a deeply human story about family, love, resilience, and grief. It offers a thoughtful and nuanced perspective on artificial intelligence. As AI reshapes our world—transforming jobs and even relationships—this play invites us to reflect on where we’re headed. Fortunately, Gunderson’s work is warm, funny, and absolutely gripping, making it far more engaging than any lecture.”

“anthropology” features an all-star cast including Amy Broomhall, Drama Dock Artistic Director Kelly Godell*, Holly Boaz, and Trish Cosgrove. The production team includes sound and effects design by Danny Powers, set and costume design by Jennifer Matthews, and lighting design by Jacob Viramontes.

Founded in 1976, Drama Dock has produced a wide range of performances—from beloved classics to bold contemporary works—providing opportunities for island artists and delivering exceptional theatre to local audiences. Season Sponsors: John L Scott Vashon, Flintworks, Vashon Thriftway, Beardsley Family Foundation and 4Culture.
