Deep Water Dialogues: Art Beneath the Surface
Vashon Center for the Arts
June 5 - 28
First Friday : June 5, 5pm-8pm

"Deep Water Dialogues: Art Beneath the Surface" celebrates marine life and underwater ecosystems of the Salish Sea and other great waters. Featuring more than 50 works by Pacific Northwest artists in oil, blown glass, photography, encaustic, and more, the exhibition explores the hidden world beneath the waterline through images of fish, whales, jellyfish, octopus, kelp forests, and other aquatic life.

The exhibition is inspired by the story of “Singer,” a 40-foot gray whale that washed ashore on Vashon Island in 2024 after suffering severe malnutrition linked to changing ocean conditions. Left to decompose naturally in a protected shoreline area, the whale became both a vital habitat for scavengers and a remarkable opportunity for scientific study. Scientists from the Vashon Nature Center, working alongside federal agencies, local students, and volunteers, later recovered Singer’s skeleton. The articulated skeleton will form the centerpiece of a monumental sculptural installation by Vashon artist Ela Lamblin in the atrium and will be available for viewing at VCA's 60th Birthday Bash on June 20.

Gallery hours: Wed - Sunday 12-5pm (closed Mon/Tues)
