Mark Bennion: Untitled
Vashon Center for the Arts
Nov 6-29
First Friday Opening, Nov 6
"Mark Bennion: Untitled" brings together five decades of work by the late Vashon artist, from early paintings and works on paper through sculpture, mixed media, his Frescoes and Tantra Series.
Seattle-born Bennion (1948–2025) exhibited across the United States, Canada and Europe beginning in 1968. Working in the tradition of Northwest abstraction, he described his Frescoes as a “confluence of eastern and western techniques and traditions,” their surfaces sanded and painted over until complete. His Tantra Series uses an elemental vocabulary of color and geometric form in small, meditative paintings, each distinctly its own.
A craftsman who founded Chinook Manufacturing, Bennion built his family home on Vashon, his sanctuary and gathering place, shared with Nancy, his wife of 53 years. A practicing Buddhist, he believed art could offer a different way of seeing the world.
